Focus on Innovation
2007 Innovation Tours and 2008 Scanlon Conference
The Scanlon Leadership Network and Scanlon Foundation will be focusing on Innovation during 2007.
Three Tours and thel 2008 Scanlon Conference will be dedicated to
understanding and improving innovation, personally, professionally and
organizationally.
The Network will be offering three Innovation Tours in 2007.
Tour #1 3M, August 8-9, 2007 in Minneapolis, MN
3M is ranked as one of the top ten most innovative companies in the
world, and through the hard work of Wayne Lindholm, Kim Johnson, the 3M
Grass Roots Innovation Team, and Tom Hagg of SGS Tool Co. we are going
to see and experience 3M in ways that very few are able to do.
On August 7-9, the Scanlon Leadership Network is bringing you the
‘cook’s tour’ of 3M in Minneapolis, MN. We have been able to obtain as
speakers many of the scientists and inventors who are leaders in
innovation at 3M—people like Art Fry who invented the Post-It Note. 3M
is also graciously opening the doors of their new, much-in-demand
Innovation Center for a tour – a true privilege that should not be
missed.
The cover story of the latest issue of Business Week is on 3M and the
struggle to create cultures of innovation and continuous improvement.
As Dwane Baumgardner and Russ Scaffede have outlined in their book “The
Leadership Roadmap” we must do both. This tour and a tour to Motorola
September 18-19, will equip us to do both.
The 3M Tour Agenda:
August 7th evening: Welcome keynote and social mixer, and dinner
at the nationally renowned Science Museum of Minnesota located on the
banks of the Mississippi River in downtown St. Paul. Science Museum of
Minnesota + food & beverages + Scanlon member colleagues + 3M
scientists and inventors = an evening of learning in a fun environment
to kick-off the 3M Innovation Tour.
August 8th, 8 am - 8 pm: Spend a full day at the beautiful
3M Tartan Park Golf Club conference center learning how 3M really
drives and supports the process of innovation. A mixture of 3M
scientists, engineers and creative minds will share their first-hand
knowledge of what makes innovation work at the grass-roots, hands-on
level. Ample time for Q&A is planned to maximize learning. After
the day of hearing from the experts, we move to dinner in the Tartan
Park dining room where networking and learning continue.
Key presenters confirmed include:
Dr. Andrew J. Ouderkirk: Andrew is a 3M Corporate Scientist
and principal inventor and project leader of the groundbreaking 3M (TM)
Multilayer Optical Film (MOF) technology within 3M's light management
platform. Dr. Ouderkirk has developed unique insight in leading
development teams and has been issued more than 100 patents.
Art Fry:
Retired 3M Corporate Scientist and Post-it Note (TM) inventor. Art is
considered the keeper of the innovative spirit inside and outside of
3M. Always willing to share his experiences, Art continues to share his
insight on the process of innovation to many groups around the country.
Alex Cirillo: Current 3M VP of Community Affairs and past VP of
3M's Commercial Graphics Division and President of 3M Canada. In Alex's
career, he has been a steady supporter of creativity and innovation.
Alex started his 3M career as a scientist in 3M laboratories and rose
to the highest levels of leadership. Alex will share an inspirational
message that supports the very foundation of innovation and leadership.
Dave Braun: Retired 3M Corporate Scientist, Occupational
Health & Safety Division, Founder of the 3M GRIT or Grass Roots
Innovation Team. Dave will describe how his passion for creativity and
sharing knowledge led to the creation of the GRIT. More than 10 years
later, the GRIT is has grown to include both 3M and non-3M members who
gather monthly to informally learn, and debate around various topics of
creativity and innovation.
3M GRIT Panel: Hear first-hand how 3M promotes creativity and
innovation from 3M GRIT members. GRIT meetings are where the creative
gloves come off and anything goes.
August 9th: Mr. H. C. Shin, 3M Executive VP of Industrial
Markets, is sponsoring a tour of 3M's new Innovation Center. This
two-hour tour will feature the "Vision Dome Theater" multi-media
presentation and the "World of Innovation" hands-on room where
Knowledge, Play and Imagination come together at 3M.
Registration Fee: $750, $100 discount for 4 or more from the same company.
Note: We anticipate that this tour will fill quickly. Members of the
Scanlon Leadership Network and Foundation will receive first priority,
then space will be made available on a first come first served basis.

Tour #2 Motorola and Top Leader Retreat, September 18-19,2007 in Shaumburg, Illinois
Praveen Gupta is helping to host this tour of Motorola and Motorola
University. Praveen was on the faculty of Motorola University when the
concepts and methods of Six-Sigma were created. We hope to join Bob

WHY ATTEND THE MOTOROLA INNOVATION TOUR AND LEADERSHIP RETREAT:
There’s no doubt that innovation has become a competitive
necessity. When viewed within the context of leaderhip,
innovation shouldn’t come from the top down. However, it is the
responsibility of a top leader to foster an environment where
innovation can prosper. How is this done? How do you break
through barriers to innovation? How do you get past the failures?
Motorola is ranked as one of the top 40 most innovative companies in
the world, was recently named #4 on the list of 100 Best Corporate
Citizens, and is one of Fortune’s Most Admired. They will serve
as a backdrop to our exploration of the leadership dimensions of
innovation. The selection of speakers, along with plenty of time
for discussion, will help you define the leader’s role in nurturing
innovation.
The tour of Motorola’s Innovation Center will showcase the breadth of
technology solutions that are currently or will be applied globally.
You will be able to view and handle future and
present Motorola innovations, and hear compelling stories of how
Motorola endeavors to change life with innovation.

Tour #3 "Measuring what Matters for Innovation and Growth" with the Business Learning Institute of the Maryland Association of CPAs.
November 12, in Baltimore, Maryland
You can't manage what you don't measure. In this one day "Skunkworks"
project Network members will learn how to apply two of the best
scorecard systems available for measuring what matters. (Skunkworks was
an innovation center developed by Lockheed to allow creative ideas to
be quickly tried and implemented).
Financial performance will be measured using the "Mobley Matrix" and
the "Financial Dashboard" a financial measuring system that provided
IBM with competitive advantage and can now help your organization focus
on the right financial measures. Jahn Ballard, who was mentored by
Mobley and developed the Financial Dashboard software to make Mobley's
insights easier to apply will share how the system works and will
provide at no charge a set of software tools that make financial
reporting, simple, and effective.
Praveen
Gupta's Six Sigma Business Scorecard helps leaders focus on key
financial and operational measures that drive performance. His
innovative system described in his best selling book, "Six Sigma
Business Scorecard." Praveen will share key drivers of performance, how
to measure them, and why they matter. Software developed to track the
Six Sigma Scorecard will also be shared.
Ten Reasons to Attend:
- Learn the three critical Financial Bottom-LInes and twelve
fundamental drivers discovered by IBM that reflect overall business
performance by one of the world’s experts on this approach.
- Learn
the measures of the Six-Sigma Scorecard and how they drive future
performance by the author of Six-Sigma Business Scorecard
- Learn
how to develop and share the critical numbers with all levels of your
organization so everyone from the CEO to the front-line employees know
what matters.
- Receive over $1,000 worth of software to
facilitate and enable the tracking, reporting and projection of the
three bottom lines and 12 drivers (Use the software on the honor
system. When you find it of value then pay for it).
- You
can’t manage what you don’t measure. Measuring the wrong things impedes
innovation and growth. You’ll learn two of the best scorecards
available today. These scorecards will work in any business, large or
small, and they will work in virtually any industry.
- Simplify
your measurement systems, so you measure what matters for innovation
and growth. The three bottom lines are compatible with required
accounting practices.
- Build a transparent/shared
business model that can be implemented and can evolve with the input
and experience of your whole team.
- Identify
measurements that relate key process measures to a company's
profitability, making the opportunity so visible that they are
difficult to ignore.
- Accelerate improvement in business performance.
- Network with thought leaders and practitioners interested in better measurement systems.

at the workshop. Participants will need to bring a laptop with the
software loaded on it to the workshop
WHAT OTHERS SAY ABOUT THE SIX-SIGMA BUSINESS SCORECARD:
If you want an introduction to the relationship managerial
scorecards and their processes (in their six-sigma guise), read Gupta.”
Paul Harmon, Business Process Trends
The major differences between the Six-Sigma Business Scorecard
approach and other corporate performance measurements are that it
requires increased involvement and accountability of leadership, it
emphasizes management’s needs to communicate (this includes feedback)
with employees, and it encourages employees’ involvement in discovering
innovative ways to improve organizational processes and results. Nicholas Mathys, DePaul University
I have read a few hundred "non-fictional" books over the years for
my MBA, for quality, etc, but I have to tell you that this book about
the use of balanced scorecards is the best business related book that I
have ever read, and I feel that every CEO should completely absorb it
to utilize its "pertinent" applications that are applicable to their
business processes, thus institutionalizing the process metrics'
continual improvement concepts of ISO/TS 16949:2002 and ISO 9001 in all
types of firms, including those that are not automotive suppliers! Bill Cooper, Global Quality Systems Senior Manager, Lear Corporation
WHAT CFOS, CONTROLLERS AND CEOS SAY ABOUT JAHN’S TRAINING:
Excellent presentation of useful tools to help owners and
managers understand the operations side of their business, and create a
vision of where to go.
Was the best seminar I have attended. The presentation was interesting,
blending discussion with practical application added depth to my
learning experience.
Very informative. Being able to use tools with real financial strengths
made the experience that much more understandable and enjoyable.
Great materials to simplify complicated financial statement data.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND:
This workshop is geared for CEO’s, COO’s, CFO’s and their direct
reports. Teams of Financial and Operational leaders are encouraged to
attend together.
COST OF THE PROGRAM: $695
